GAS LEAK

In the event of a gas odor, refrain from using light switches, telephones, or cell phones. Instead, promptly open doors and windows, evacuate the premises, and contact professionals to locate the gas leak. Our service vehicles are equipped with specialized gas leak detection equipment, enabling us to swiftly pinpoint and address gas leaks in your home.

It is important to note that natural gas is inherently colorless and odorless. However, for safety purposes, a harmless chemical called mercaptan is added to impart a distinctive odor, often described as reminiscent of rotten eggs or hydrogen sulfide.

GAS LEAK REPAIR

Upon identifying a gas leak, it may be necessary to shut off the gas supply to your house before conducting repairs. It is crucial to have an independent shutoff valve installed, separate from the gas company’s valve. If such a valve is absent, we are not authorized to turn off the gas, necessitating scheduling with New Mexico Gas to perform the shutdown. This process involves subsequent scheduling for the gas to be turned back on, lines to be purged, and appliances to be relit.

Following the completion of the gas leak repair, thorough testing for any residual leaks will be conducted to ensure the safety and integrity of the gas system.

DO PLUMBERS FIX GAS LEAKS?

Certainly! Plumbers are well-equipped to address gas leaks. The synergy between plumbing and gas fitting is integral, with most plumbers holding both a JP (Journeyman Plumber) and a JG (Journeyman Gas Fitter) license. Given the significant overlap between these two domains, it is practical and common for professionals to be licensed in both, allowing them to proficiently handle issues related to plumbing and gas systems.

DOES THE GAS COMPANY FIX GAS LEAKS?

The gas company does not perform gas leak repairs. When contacted due to a gas odor, they conduct a comprehensive inspection of the entire gas system within your residence. This examination includes identifying any leaks, safety concerns, and code violations. As a precautionary measure, they may temporarily disable or cap your gas meter and issue a correction notice. To restore gas service, a licensed gas plumber is required to address and rectify the identified issues. Furthermore, a city inspection may be mandated before the gas can be reinstated, and only a licensed gas contractor has the authority to obtain the necessary permits for the reactivation of gas service.

WHAT IT MEANS WHEN YOUR FURNACE IS RED-TAGGED

When your furnace receives a red tag, it signifies that either an HVAC technician or a city inspector has identified a critical safety issue with the unit. These safety concerns may include a carbon monoxide leak, hazardous flame rollout, absence of a safety system, or problems with the burner. In the case of a carbon monoxide leak, it is often associated with a cracked heat exchanger, which is particularly common in older furnaces with iron heat exchangers, though pressed metal heat exchangers can also be susceptible to cracking.

It’s crucial to understand that if the furnace is deemed unsafe and continues to operate, it poses a serious risk of injury or even death. Addressing the issues highlighted by the red tag is imperative for the safe operation of the furnace.

RED TAG REPAIR

Our licensing extends to the resolution of red tag issues upon identification. We possess the capability to secure the necessary permits and coordinate follow-up inspections as required, ensuring a comprehensive and compliant resolution to any flagged concerns.

GAS LEAK DETECTION COST

The cost for gas leak detection is generally on the lower end as gas leaks are typically located swiftly. However, if the detection process requires cutting open walls to pinpoint the leak, the associated time and labor can increase, leading to higher costs.
